🏖️ Lido di Venezia – The Elegant Escape

Panoramic view of Lido di Venezia with vaporetto water buses crossing the lagoon.

🧭 Introduction

The Lido di Venezia beach is Venice’s elegant seaside escape — golden sand, quiet bike paths, and sea breeze just 15 minutes from St. Mark’s Square. If Venice is art and history, the Lido di Venezia beach is freedom: space, nature, and a slower rhythm.

Stretching between the Venetian Lagoon and the Adriatic Sea, the Lido di Venezia is where Venetian elegance meets the sea breeze.
Famous for its golden beaches and early 20th-century villas, the Lido offers a calmer, more refined side of Venice — a perfect escape from the crowds of St. Mark’s Square.

This is where Venetians come to relax.

🕰️ A Touch of History

The Lido was once a quiet sandbar with monasteries and fishermen’s huts.

In the late 19th and early 20th century, it became a glamorous seaside retreat for European royalty, artists, and writers.
Legendary hotels like the Excelsior and Des Bains hosted kings, writers, and movie stars.

Since 1932, the Lido has been home to the Venice International Film Festival, the oldest film festival in history and one of the world’s most prestigious cinema events.

Every September, the red carpet lights up this quiet island with a touch of Hollywood.

🚤 How to Get There

Take vaporetto line 1 or 5.1 from:

Piazzale Roma

San Zaccaria

Stop: Lido S.M.E. (Santa Maria Elisabetta)

⏱️ Travel time: 15–20 minutes from San Zaccaria

From the terminal you can rent bikes or take buses or car taxis to explore the entire island.

🚗 Yes — the Lido, together with Pellestrina and Sant’Erasmo, is one of the very few areas in Venice where cars are allowed. To bring your car, you need the ferry boat (line 17), which connects Tronchetto (Venice) to the Lido.

This is not a vaporetto — it’s a larger ferry designed specifically for vehicles. You drive directly onto the boat, stay inside or get out during the crossing, and then drive off when you arrive.

👉 Crossing time: about 35 minutes

👉 Reservation is recommended, especially in summer

👉 Departure point: Tronchetto (not Piazzale Roma)

It’s a completely different experience from normal public transport — more practical than scenic, but essential if you want to move freely on the island with your own car.

The ferry boat docked at Lido di Venezia — the vehicle ferry that connects Tronchetto with the island.

Reaching the Lido is part of the experience itself — crossing the lagoon by vaporetto (Venice’s public water bus) offers one of the most beautiful approaches to the island.

✈️ A Surprising Detail: The Lido Has an Airport

Few people realize that the Lido of Venice is also home to a small historic airport. Aeroporto Nicelli, opened in the early days of aviation, is still operational today, serving private flights and light aircraft. Long before mass tourism reached Venice, it welcomed pioneering aviators and elegant arrivals, and it remains a quiet reminder of the Lido’s refined and unconventional past.

☀️ Tips for Visitors

✔️ Best time to visit: May–June or September
✔️ If visiting during the Venice Film Festival, book accommodation early
✔️ Sunset from the northern tip (San Nicolò) is unforgettable.

🐶 Dog-friendly beach (secret local tip)

At the left end of Lido di Venezia beach you will find Pachuka Bau Beach – Dog Friendly Beach.

Dogs are allowed to swim and stay on the beach together with their owners. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available in the dedicated area (they are paid), and the beach also has a bar and restaurant on site. It is one of the very few places in Venice where dogs are truly and openly welcome.

Along the beach, near the sunbed area, there is a free cold-water shower for people. If you want a hot shower instead, those are paid and are located behind the beach bar and restaurant (which turns into a small nightclub during the summer season). Right next to the sunbeds there is also a drinking water fountain for dogs.

It is a very practical and relaxed solution if you are visiting Venice with your dog and want a real beach day without restrictions.

Only beach in Venice where dogs are truly welcome.
